Greetings, First Friday Book Club Members:
Our virtual meeting on June 5 was a wonderful gathering of different opinions and surprising points of view, as usual.
Although we covered two readings ("Less" and "Killers of the Flower Moon"), which involved two entirely disparate books, our discussion managed to include: stereotypes in historical writing, aging as a universally-recognized plot point, growing up in Oklahoma, movies about the history of the FBI, living in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC , whether the story of Arthur Less is a sad or happy (both), and the different ways each reader perceives the written (and heard) story.
"Here, all this time, Arthur Less thought he was merely a bad writer. A bad lover, a bad friend, a bad son. Apparently the condition is worse; he is bad at being himself."
After a highly scientific poll, here is the proposed casting call for the movie version Andrew Sean Greer's "Less":
What do you think?
There may be a possibility we can get together in person for the July 10 meeting!
The Senior Center is currently under construction, so we will not be able to gather there for now:
[Latest news is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWdIF6o3AwY&ct ]
But we may be able to use another Recreation Center or possibly the McKinney Public Library.
As sites become available, I will send out details.
Of course, we can always assemble digitally again - but cake makes everything better - even if we have to wear masks and sit 6 feet apart to devour it.
Our reading for July 10 is The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.
This is the opening novel of a twenty-part series and provides the back story and characters that appear throughout the books.
A few reviews and other tidbits:
[NYT] Miss Marple of Botswana
[Chicago Tribune] Unlikely but delightful detective
[Publishers Weekly] Review
[BBC] Pilot for award-winning TV series [now on YouTube]
Stand by for more news!
