☕ 😎 First Friday Book Club Meeting - July 10 2020 😎

Greetings, First Friday Book Club Members:

Hey, despite the heat and the spike and the roof being off our meeting hall - we had an enjoyable gathering!

True, there was no cake --  but we were out of the house, laughing with each other in the same room, and NOT watching a video-

Mma Ramotswe provided plenty to talk about, and we shared points of view on Botswana, feminism, literary devices and cultural appropriation.

If we ever get a chance, we should invite the Right Honorable Alexander McCall-Smith to explain how he was able to produce the convincingly charming voice of a 30-ish Botswana woman, despite being a 60-ish Scottish man.

The pilot episode of the BBC series is available for free at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XczD3cRQ98Q (The first 40 seconds are filler so fast forward to begin the show) Pula, pula, mma and raa!

Tswana Traditional Dance Group performs in Mahikeng at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJfCNL299zo

Also - there are recipes available at  Mma Ramotswe's Cookbook, including, of course, delectable fruit cake:

There has been talk of a special Book Club meeting before Thanksgiving this year,  in which we might produce examples of our favorite food from our readings throughout 2020. (This fruitcake is definitely an entry for that feast...)  Who knows what will happen over the next few months? Keep bookish food ideas on your radar.

Our reading for August is Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Anna Quinlen. The alternate title is The Library Book by Susan Orlean. More details to follow in a few weeks. Stay cool!
